Ten True Facts About Your Character:
Let's see, ten facts.
Fact 1: Alfred is completely and totally in love with all things science, especially space. He'd always wanted to be an astronaut and laments the loss of the space program. He was in mourning for a month when it ended.
Fact 2: He loves talking about philosophy. Not politics, that's boring to him. Things that really make you think, he's all about that.
Fact 3: He has a low alcohol tolerance. He just does. He wishes he could handle more (legal or not), but after a couple of beers, he'll feel uncomfortably tipsy, and he's gotten sick with just one bottle before.
Fact 4: He's masochistic when it comes to movies. He'll either pick ones that he actually thinks are scary (making him lose sleep), or one that he completely disagrees with (pissing him off), or one he thinks is stupid (boring him completely)before he picks one that he'd actually like (something science related or really action-y) because he can't help it.
Fact 5: He's really self-conscious about his weight. He works out, so he's actually in good shape despite what he eats, but he will literally start crying if someone he cares about teases him about it too much. If it's someone he doesn't like, he'll get mad, and if provoked enough, violent, but he can usually talk enough smack that the other person backs down because of their own insecurities.
Fact 6: He actually has contacts, but he doesn't like them. They make him feel weird, and he was never able to shake the feeling that he was wearing them, so he generally just wears his glasses. Plus, he thinks they make him look older, and smarter. If he's trying to dress up or impress someone, though, he'll sometimes wear the contacts.
Fact 7: He is patriotic to the core, meaning the country he was born in (whatever country Hartsbridge is in), Hartsbridge, and the University of Hartsbridge are all near and dear to his heart. He'll get really pumped up about it, cheer at football games and pep rallies, wear school colors, and decorate his room with Go Lions! gear. He'll even paint his face and buy Lion costumes. It's that intense.
Fact 8: He's got huge heart. When he gets money, he barely manages to use it for himself on things he HAS to pay for, and the rest of it he gives to people who need it more than him. He likes giving away things and helping people, making other people happy makes him happy. He also donates blood periodically for this reason.
Fact 9: Where he's not really a party animal, per say, he loves to dance and have fun, so he'll go out to parties on occasion. Sometimes he goes just to dance and sing under his breath, but usually he's social enough that he'll start talking to people.
Fact 10: He's actually got a really good singing voice when he's being serious about the singing. Like, if he's trying to make someone laugh, or lighten the mood, he'll do it badly, or with weird accents, but if he's trying to impress or is just doing it to have fun for himself, he's pretty good at it.
Writing Sample:
It took Alfred a little while to get over the small-town feel of Hartsbridge, a period of a good few weeks, before he genuinely started to like the place. It had seemed too tight-knit at first, and he worried at the opinions of the people, their intelligence levels, how they saw the world and space from their little kitschy homes in their little kitschy neighborhoods. From his experience, small towns tended to be a little too conservative and traditional, and that just wasn't fun.
But this place seemed a bit better than that. He could spread his wings here with a good bit of wiggle-room if the nice University and teenage population had anything to say for the town. Yes, as he put up the 'Go Lions!' flag in his new dorm room, he exhaled and stood back to admire the still mostly bare walls, a grin on his face, "...Yeah, this'll do just fine."
He then proceeded to pull out his Einstein poster (the one with the tongue, of course), a poster of the solar system, one of Lord of the Rings, a diagram of time from Doctor Who, and his chart on How to Speak Klingon. He put them everywhere he could get them, set up his laptop on his desk, and got on Skype with his buddy, waving his Dalek figurine at them, “My dorm room has its phasers set to awesome, you are free to be jealous now.”
“Jealous? It’s a dorm room.”
“Yeah, with ten times the awesome of your regular bedroom. Weird how that works,” Alfred grinned, picking up the Dalek and putting on the voice, “WOULD YOU LIKE SOME ICE FOR THAT BUUUUUURN.”
His friend was too busy laughing to be properly offended, and they exchanged nerdy jokes before they decided to go for a round of Team Fortress 2.
Yeah, things would be pretty okay here. With the right roommates, it could be awesome, but he’d cross that bridge when his roommates showed up.
IC SURVEY
1.) Introduce yourself in a few sentences!
Uhh, Alright. Hi! I'm Alfred F. Jones, use the whole name if you're gonna use the whole name, please. I'm a little shy of 5' 10'', and have blonde hair and blue eyes (but the Aryan thing was, is, and will always be stupid). Um, my major right now is Astrophysics, and I'm not sure if I'll minor in anything yet, though I might do Philosophy for kicks. Right, uh, if there's anything you wanna know about me, just ask! I'm a really friendly guy!
2.) What's your greatest dream in life?
To do something meaningful that I enjoy. (My secret plan is to make butt-loads of money in the field of science, then donate the money to people who need it- or like, split up the money that I make and spread the wealth around.)
3.) What is your biggest pet peeve?
Hm. Lags. Whether in a video game or in conversation, lags suck. 's kinda why I talk a lot. I usually don't like silences.
4.) Why did you come to Hartsbridge?
To go to the University. Mom actually moved us here because she wanted a nice place to be grounded for a while (we move a lot), but the University has a kickin science department, so it works for me.
5.) Do you consider yourself an optimist or a pessimist? Why?
Optimist all the way! I recognize what is real and technically possible, but I'm way too motivated to call myself a realist- There are too many things that can be done- great leaps and bounds that can be made! Nah, there are way too many great possibilities to just be a realist, way too many.
6.) Do you prefer functionality or style, and why?
Hm. Functionality, I suppose. There's no real point if you get something stylistically cool that just falls apart (a moment of silence for the fallen action figures made with bad material. We'll never forget you).
7.) What are two of your best qualities? Two of your worst?
Uhh, dang. Deep question, kinda. I guess my best qualities are my determination and my optimism, since I never give up once I've started something, and I always see the best in things first. I like those qualities about me, anyway. My worst... Hm. I tend to be a bit air-headed sometimes, and will get lost in day dreams or doodling out things. Sometimes that leads me to ignoring people when they're speaking, or being accidently rude to people when I don't mean to. Other than that... I have days where I'm down on myself. Everyone kinda has those days, but mine involve me generally being quieter all day, not really being focused, and staying at home too much. It's pretty noticeable, and I can never keep myself in bed all day, so I try not to let people see it. Talking during those times doesn't help too much, so I don't like to. Yeah, that's one of my lesser qualities, I guess.
8.) What was your childhood like? Did you get along well with any siblings you had? What about your parents?
Mine was pretty rockin, actually. I have a brother, we get along great, like two peas in a pod (we did that for Halloween once, it was awesome!). My Dad and I were best friends up until he and my mom got divorced, and I would have gone with him, but he was kind of a jerk to her, and it wasn't cool, so I stayed with her. He and I don't see each other much anymore, but the times where we were really close was nice. Mom is wonderful, sweetest lady you'll ever meet, but she knows how to lay down the law, and will do it if provoked. Not the best at cooking, though, so I learned how to do that early.
9.) What is your happiest memory?
When my dad took me to a Space Science Center. It had this really cool room- the Omnisphere, that rotated and showed all the stars and planets, and gave descriptions of some of them, and was just generally awesome. That's what started my interest in them, and it was just so cool that I couldn't stop talking about it for weeks after it.
10.) Describe yourself physically.
Ah, I kinda did this earlier, but, sure, why not. I'm about 5' 10'', filled out as far as muscles go, and I work out, so I'm in pretty good shape, I guess? Hm. Blonde hair, with this one piece that has been a jerk ever since I was little and has made sure that it will never ever ever let itself be put down (except with massive amounts of hair gel). Blue eyes, and I wear glasses, usually. Uh.. I'm a jeans and hoodie kind of guy? Not sure what else you need as far as a physical description, haha.
